What we’re actually selecting for.
Not just marks. The entrance exam looks for the things that make an accelerated room work: speed with fundamentals, appetite for unfamiliar problems, and the work ethic to keep pace. Plenty of capable students belong in our standard stream — the A-Class is for those ready to be pushed by the room itself.

A-Class + scholarship
Top performers earn a seat and a 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% scholarship on Year 11 fees.
A-Class seat
Strong performers earn a seat in the selective stream at standard fees.

Everyone below the bar is offered a position in our standard Year 11 classes — nothing is lost by sitting.
Scholarships are awarded solely on entrance-exam results and apply on a termly basis for the full Year 11 course. They are retained each term subject to sustained performance and engagement in class and examinations.
Exam FAQ
Before you sit it.
- What does the exam cover?
- Three things: mathematical reasoning, scientific skills and scientific thinking. It is not a syllabus test — there's no Year 10 topic list behind it.
- What's the exam structure?
- A 90-minute written paper of short-answer and extended-response questions only — no multiple guess! You'll be showing working and reasoning, not picking letters.
- How can I prepare?
- You can't — and that's the point. The exam deliberately doesn't test prior knowledge of Physics or Chemistry; it tests problem-solving, general scientific skills and mathematical reasoning. There are no preparation materials because none would help. Sleep well and come curious.
- I can't make Sunday 20 September — can I sit it another day?
- Unfortunately not — the entrance exam is a one-day event. If you can't attend, you won't be eligible for the A-Class or its scholarships for our first term. Entry may still be possible later in the year, based on performance in class and in Sigma Examinations.
- Which session am I booking?
- Session 1 (9:30 am) is full, so all bookings now go to the final session — Sunday 20 September, 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, at our Parramatta campus. Fewer than 10 seats remain, and there are no plans to add more sessions.
- What should I bring?
- Everything you'd take to a standard science or maths exam: pens, pencils, ruler, protractor, calculator… and your brain.
- How much does the exam cost?
- $49 — or $29 if you book by September 17. Either way, the fee is fully deducted from your first term's fees if the student enrols, so for anyone who joins, the exam is effectively free.
- How do the scholarships work?
- It's actually pretty simple: everything is based on your performance on the day. Nothing else. There is no limit on the number of scholarships — at least one top-performing student will be offered each of the 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% tiers, and the exact numbers depend on the quality of the responses. In theory, every student who sits the exam could earn the 100% scholarship. The quality of responses is determined at the discretion of the Sigma Science Education staff involved. Scholarships can be revoked at any point during enrolment, at the discretion of Sigma Science Education staff — though please note: we have been giving scholarships for 10 years, and up to this point we have never revoked one.
- I made the A-Class — do I keep the position next term?
- It depends on your performance. If you regularly perform at a level below the expectations of Sigma Science Education staff, your position may be given to another student. You and your parents will be informed along the way if we believe you are at risk of losing your position — it will not come as a surprise.
- Will I get my exam back?
- No. Papers are not returned, and no marks, feedback or cohort comparison is released. Students and parents are simply informed of the outcome — a seat in the A-Class (and any scholarship awarded), or an offered position in our standard stream.
- When do we hear the outcome?
- The very next day. Emails go out to the parents of all exam attendees on Monday 21 September with the outcome.
- What happens if I don't reach the bar?
- Nothing is lost. Students below the A-Class bar are offered a position in our standard Year 11 stream — the same syllabus at a strong pace, taught by the same team. Plenty of very capable students belong there.
